Selectmen notes:
Board extends interim health director’s time here

May 9, 2008

The Board of Selectmen, by a vote of 4-1, reappointed Dr. David Reed as interim health director for the town Health Department.

Selectmen Linda Santarella was the lone No vote.

Reed was hired as interim health director in January after the selectmen decided not to renew Dr. Margaret McLaughlin’s contract as part-time health director.

At the time of Reed’s hiring, the Advisory Board of Health was in the midst of dissecting a needs assessment of the health department.

Last month, the health board recommended that the selectmen upgrade to a full-time department, which the selectmen approved a week later.

Reed will serve as interim health director until a full-time director is hired.

Selectmen set Road Race date

The selectmen unanimously approved Sunday, Sept. 21, as the date for the 29th annual Darien Road Race.

The race benefits the Community Fund of Darien as well as local cancer research and services organizations that support the community, including Bennett Center at Stamford Hospital, The Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital, and Circle of Care that supports children who are battling cancer.

The race route, which stretches along scenic waterfront roads, includes two events: a 10 kilometer race and a 1.5 mile race called “The Loop.” Both events, which begin at 1, will start and finish at Pear Tree Point Beach. For more information, contact The Community Fund at 655-8775.

New perimeter for bonfires

The selectmen unanimously approved a transfer of bonfire permitting responsibilities from the town Health Department to the Fire Marshal’s Office. First Selectman Evonne Klein told The Darien Times on Tuesday that the permit involves any member of the public looking to have a large fire either on the beach or on their property. She described a bonfire as “bigger than a fire pit.” For more information, contact the fire marshal’s office at 656-7345.

Appointments

The selectmen unanimously approved reappointing Republican Charles Goodyear to the Parks & Recreation Commission and appointing Democrat Michael Ruegger to the Darien Government Access TV Committee.
