TEEN EDITION OPINION
A crew team would complete list of preppy sports at DHS

Darien High School’s long-time rival New Canaan High School has a crew team, as well as many other high schools in the area such as Greenwich High School. But many rowers at DHS are left without a team to call their own, forced to be satisfied with just a club. And without a crew team — can Darien High School truly be considered preppy?

This year, DHS added the crew club to its long list of extra curricular activities. This is the first time rowing has been recognized as a school related sport at DHS. However, in the club, not all participants row on the same team. Some members row for the Maritime Rowing Club, others for the Norwalk River Rowing Association and a few for the Saugatuck Rowing Club. Many participants even row for the New Canaan High School team. The DHS rowers should be united as one team who can participate in the sport with Blue Wave pride.

DHS is one of the few high schools in the area not to have a crew team. Schools like New Canaan High School, Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy and Brunswick School all have rowing teams. These schools are some of Darien’s biggest competitors in other sports such as soccer, swimming and lacrosse, and the rowers of DHS could bring the same level of competition to crew. In fact, depriving other schools of our competition could stop them from living up to their full potential.

It is not unknown that DHS is considered a “preppy” school. To add to that title, DHS offers sports such as field hockey, lacrosse, skiing, sailing, squash, golf and tennis, which are often associated with “preppy” people. However, one sport that often comes to mind when one thinks of preppy sports is crew. So if DHS doesn’t have a crew team, how can we fully live up to the title of “preppy”?

There are more than enough rowers at DHS to make a team. There are plenty of other schools for Darien to compete against, and DHS rowers would provide excellent competition for other schools in the area. For DHS to finally become a truly preppy school, rowers must first join together to form an official DHS crew team.
