William Unhoch

William F. Unhoch died on Monday, April 21. He was 84 years old.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 30, 1923. For the past 40 years he was a resident of Greenwich, raising his family in Riverside.

Mr. Unhoch made his childhood passion for sailing a lifelong vocation as a professional yacht captain. His yachting career spanned 33 years, beginning in 1955 on the yacht Baccarat, owned by George Coumantaros of Greenwich. He participated in numerous Block Island and Bermuda races, and he once sailed transatlantic from New York to Greece. He was fondly known as “Baccarat Bill,” friends said.

In his later years working for Crawford Failey, and later, John T. Dorrance of Gladwin, Pa., his job took him on pleasure cruises from Florida to Maine, with much of his time spent in the Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, off Newport, R.l., and Northeast Harbor, Maine.

Mr. Unhoch was a member of Christ Church, where two of his daughters were married, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons, Pelham Lodge No. 712.
Mr. Unhoch is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth; his three daughters, Nancy Unhoch of Westport, Lisa Leblebicioglu of Millington, N.J., and Pamela Tomer of Cos Cob, and one grandson, Philip Leblebicioglu.

His only sibling, Philip, a pilot, was killed in World War II.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Stroke Association.
