Greenwich lax takes bite out of Bruins, wins 9-6
It took only two minutes in the fourth quarter for the Greenwich High School boys lacrosse team to pull away from cross-town rival Brunswick Thursday under the lights at Cardinal Stadium and win 9-6.
With Big Red trailing 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter, Greenwich's
Tucker Stafford tied the game with 6:14 to play, as he beat Brunswick
goalie Peter Castine. Less than 40 second later Greenwich took the
lead, as Jared Horowitz worked his way from behind the goalie net and
scored on the wrap-around goal.
With 4:55 to play, Stafford struck again, this time going in front of
the net and bouncing a shot between the pipes to give the Cardinals a
-6 lead. On the ensuing faceoff, which Greenwich's Ryan Benincasa won,
he passed to Horowitz. Horowitz took the ball in the Bruins zone and
passed to Stafford for the 9-6 lead with 4:45 to play.
"We put the ball where it needed to be," Greenwich head coach Paul
Burke said. "I thought we shot the ball high and tried to beat the kid
that way. When we put the ball down low we scored. Fortunately Tucker
straightened that out in the second half and Jared came around and
finished one low. That was the way to go."
"They found a way to get good quality shots," Brunswick head coach
David Bruce said. "It was an even game except for a couple of minutes
in the fourth quarter. They are a really good team and have a couple of
real studs out there."

Youth carries Sacred Heart Tigers tennis
The belief that sometimes youth must be served has certainly been
displayed by this year’s tennis team at Convent of the Sacred Heart.
The Tigers have enjoyed a successful season so far, taking a 5-2 record
into Tuesday’s match against Greens Farms Academy, including a 4-1 mark
in the FAA.
In fact, CSH won its first five matches of the season by scores of 5-0, 6-0, 5-0 and back-to-back 5-1 victories.

Victory a long time coming
GHS boys lacrosse upends Blue Wave for first time since 1988
To say it’s been a long time since the Greenwich High boys
lacrosse team came out victorious against Darien is an understatement.
In fact, senior midfielder Ryan Benincasa said it best after Big Red’s
victory over the Blue Wave Saturday afternoon.
“This is unbelievable,” Benincasa said. “Coach Burke reminded us that
no one on this team was alive when Greenwich beat Darien, so this was
really big. It shows how this program has grown into the power it is
now. A few years ago we didn’t even make the playoffs.”

GHS tennis rolls past rival Rams, 6-1
Ever since the April 3 loss to Fairfield Warde 5-2, a refocused
Greenwich High School boys tennis team has been on a mission to win.
Last Thursday, rival New Canaan High School got a taste of how focused Big Red is, as the Cards came out victorious 6-1.
“I think the team concept is huge and the amount of time they spent
together struggling after that opening loss and coming together as a
team has brought them closer as a team,” Greenwich head coach Connie
Jones said. “Other games have helped them improve the intelligence of
play. This was a good win for the team today. We’re going to take it
one step at a time.”
The Cardinals dominated from the start, winning all but one singles match and sweeping the doubles.

Big first spells doom for GHS baseball team
Although the Greenwich High School baseball team was determined to get
on the winning side of the scoreboard, it was a five-run first inning
for St. Joseph High School that spelled doom for the Cardinals Monday
afternoon.
The Cadets added three more runs throughout the game and went on to
beat Greenwich 8-4 in a battle for a possible playoff position in the
upcoming Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs.
“We’re just not clicking yet,” Greenwich head coach Mike Mora said.
“We’re not getting everything going at the same time. I thought against
Trinity we were coming along, but then comes the first inning in this
game and they put five runs on the board. I thought offensively we
played well after that, but you can’t give up five runs to start the
game.”

Lady Cards win battle of tennis unbeatens
The days and hours leading up to a girls tennis match between the
Greenwich Cardinals and New Canaan Rams are filled with anticipation
and perhaps a little nervousness for the players. The teams have
clearly established themselves as the class of the FCIAC and so the
clash of the titans is one which is circled on the calendars from day
one of the preseason.
