Registrar retires after 30 years
|
Veronica Baron Musca resigned last Friday from her position as Republican registrar of voters in a one-page letter to the Republican Town Committee.
Ms. Musca, who has served as registrar for about 12 years, said her decision to resign from politics was of her own free will and that she thought it was time for her to retire.
“I’ll be a snowbird for some amount of time ... I’ll do what it is retired people do,” said Ms. Musca of her plans once she retires on Jan. 2, 2009.
Ms. Musca said Republican Party officials had known of her intentions since the last state elections in 2006. She said at that point she began looking around town for someone to appoint as a deputy.
Ms. Musca has served the Republican Party for 30 years, on several volunteer committees of the Republican Town Committee, including office consultant, district chairwoman and executive committee member. She also served the Representative Town Meeting as District 3 chairwoman and secretary.
Her part-time position as registrar of voters became a larger load of work in the past year while the town transitioned from the old lever voting machines to the new optical scanners. The recounts during the presidential election in 2000 prompted a state mandate to change the voting machines throughout the state.
“My main intention to stay the last term was to help with the new equipment,” she said. “I wanted to make sure everything was in place before I left.”
Aside from the town elections held in October, Ms. Musca said, it is important to stay on for the presidential election this year.
Ms. Musca said two people have already stepped up to take over her position.
John Raben, chairman of the Republican Town Committee, could not be reached before press time.
