Food drive next week: Put your donation near the mailbox
|
On Saturday, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America, including Greenwich, will collect canned food from their postal customers as part of the 16th annual National Association of Letter Carriers National Food Drive — the largest one-day food drive in the country.
The effort has resulted in delivery of more than 836 million pounds of donations to community food banks and pantries over the past 15 years.
Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices and deliver them to community food banks, pantries and shelters. Nearly 1,500 local National Association of Letter Carriers branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands are involved.
Campbell Soup Company and the U.S. Postal Service are co-sponsoring the printing of 120 million postcards to encourage the general public to participate in the drive. Campbell Soup also ear-marked an additional one million-pound canned food donation to the drive. Cox Marget Media and its Valpak Direct Marketing Systems is also a supporter.
To participate, place a box or can of non-perishable food next to the mailbox before the letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday.
