Soap Box Derby coming back to town

It’s been called “The Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World,” “The Gravity Grand Prix” and many other expansive euphemisms, but to most of the million-plus youngsters who’ve participated, it’s just “The All American Soap Box Derby.” It was christened back in 1933 when a Dayton (Ohio) Daily News photographer encountered three boys racing homemade, engineless cars down an inclined brick street. The year 1936 would be a climactic one of growth, establishing the derby as a national institution that held events in Greenwich even in the late 1960s.

This year, Vivapop.com is bringing the derby back to town on Sunday, Sept. 14. The race site is Greenwich Avenue.

This is a benefit for the United Way of Greenwich and will run in conjunction with the organization's 75th anniversary celebration.

Corporate sponsorships are available.
