Out of time

For the people of Goldens Bridge — and those living on Fairmount Road in particular — the recent dispute between the town and the owners of dilapidated and dangerous cottages is of little concern. Nearby residents just want the unoccupied and asbestos-filled structures removed. More ...

Art for more than just art’s sake

According to local legend (and in this case it’s true), the movie Pollack with Ed Harris was filmed here, and if you ever saw the movie you would remember this part: the long drive through windblown Hopperesque pines trees surrounded by deep black evening now opening up to a clearing with a stark white house. That’s where the Ward Pound Ridge Gallery is sited. In the movie, nighttime approached and the misbehaving artist Jackson Pollack sped down the road in his convertible Buick V-8 and ended up crashing over a big rock. They say the park looks like the Springs of Eastern Long Island in the 1950s. Even Zeke’s Sportsman’s Shop was corralled into one scene. For days the residents were treated to the sights of old 50s cars parked in front. More ...

Let the voters decide

Town Supervisor Edward Brancati has reiterated his interest in acquiring the property off Route 22 in Goldens Bridge that former Town Supervisor Edward Mahoney famously (or infamously, depending on one’s political bent) sought for playing fields, a community center and even a state police barracks. Mr. Brancati, though, has a different vision for the land. He wants to buy it in order to swap it for land owned by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that is closer to the shopping center in Goldens Bridge. His goal is to re-create the hamlet center that was destroyed when the state bulldozed through it in the 1960s to make room for Interstate 684. More ...

Back to school — now?

With Memorial Day Weekend marking the more-or-less official start of summer, the schools are into pre-vacation mode. Seniors are marking off the days until they get out, and everybody else is reviewing what they learned — or at least, what they’re being tested on. Since I’ve been neglecting the schools of late, we should review what we’ve learned as well. More ...

A Bronx tale in Lewisboro

Most politicians would travel hours for the chance to speak to a group of a dozen constituents for 30 uninterrupted minutes. When Newt Gingrich and the House Republicans figured out in the 1980s that CSPAN provided them with a vastly larger audience for a much longer period of time, the nature of politics changed. Political debate came directly into the homes of voters, unfiltered by the mainstream media. More ...

Ready for the next step

Congratulations to Eve Hundt and Janet Harckham on winning the two open school board seats on Tuesday, and to the current board members and school administration in passing next year’s budget and a proposition to buy vehicles and a generator. Despite a difficult economic atmosphere with soaring gas and food prices, inflation and a staggering economy, the board presented a budget that voters thought was sound and they approved it by a relatively wide margin. This is a significant victory for school officials that should not go unnoticed. More ...

It won’t help land a loan,
but poetry’s power still persists

In an uncharacteristic lapse of judgment, the good folks at The Harvey School selected me to be a poetry contest “deciderer.” More ...

Yes to budget, Harckham and Hundt

This year’s school board race was much quieter and less contentious than it has been in recent memory, and perhaps that’s a reflection of the state of the board and the public’s perception of it. There are still distracters, and the board deserves criticism at times, but the battle line between pro-spending, education-at-all-costs backers and those who find fault with anything and everything the board does has greatly faded. And rightly so. More ...

Déjà vu all over again, again

They say short-term memory is the first thing to go. But worse than not being able to remember is having the nagging feeling that you do remember something, but not being sure that what you are remembering is correct. For instance, there’s this week’s headline, to which I added a second “again” because I vaguely recall having used that Yogi Berra quote as a headline once before. And then there’s the opening line, “They say short-term memory is the first thing to go.” I’m pretty sure I may have used that before, but it’s possible I’m just experiencing — what do they call it?
Oh yeah ... “déjà vu.” More ...

Tonight on Larry King

CNN TRANSCRIPT

MAY 15, 2008

LARRY KING: Back again with Jeff Morris and J.D. Piro. Jeff, you were saying?

JEFF MORRIS: Larry, it’s surprisingly easy for a fire to start inside the wall and ignite the frame of the house. Without a sprinkler system, the whole house goes up like, well, like a pile of dry wood.

LK: And there go the wetlands! So you support sprinklers, J.D.?  More ...
