Hitting the hay at the Hayloft
Hearing rumors of an imminent sale, and “good riddance” thought I,
being thoroughly convinced along with everyone else that the Hayloft
Motel was, at best, a blight on our fair upscale town, I ducked out one
early eve to avoid “helping” with the kids’ homework, for as we all
know the current high school load is impossible to discern and
“helping” only further erodes the shaky foundation of The Glorious Dad
in a teen’s eye. More ...

Make bullies pay the price
Every child who attends school is affected by bullying in some manner.
Whether it’s acting as the bully, being bullied or observing someone
bullying another, there is no student who has not dealt with this
problem. As any adult remembers, bullying is not a new phenomenon — it
has been going on for years. Yet high-profile actions of terrifying and
deadly retaliation to bullying have made people pay more attention to
the matter in recent years — and has caused school districts to take a
more active role in addressing the issue. And for good reason. While
bullying has been a mainstay of childhood for generations, the
consequences are becoming more severe now — and, in Katonah-Lewisboro
at least, it seems to be happening more often and with alarming
regularity. More ...

Paging Cincinnatus
Lewisboro Republicans are finally coming to grips with the fact that
elections have consequences, particularly when you lose elections. Such
was the case last November, when the Lewisboro Republican Party saw its
four-to-one Town Board majority turn into a three-to-two deficit.
Losing elections means losing the ability to control events and to make
choices for the town. Two of those choices — the town attorney and the
chairpersonship of the Committee for the Disabled — reflect recent
events. More ...

Somebody's ideas are all wet
There’s an unwritten rule around here that the left and right side
columnists are not supposed to directly attack each other. I think the
origin of that guideline was the belief that readers would quickly get
bored with endless back-and-forth sniping — an idea that seems to have
eluded the news media in their coverage of the Democratic presidential
campaign. I’m certainly not going to break with tradition, but I will
say that somebody recently wrote some pretty outrageous things on this
page that I simply cannot allow to go unanswered. More ...

A needless delay
The fact that the Town Board, and Town Supervisor Edward Brancati in
particular, has not appointed someone to chair the Committee for the
Disabled is baffling and a bit disconcerting, because it has rendered
the committee useless so far this year. More ...

Swinging single at the library
One exceedingly fine early spring day walking the grounds of the estate
and carefully giving instruction to the laborers on the correct method
of boxwood shaping: Not butchery, you fools! As we all know, boxwoods
are best pruned, rather than sheared, to maintain a natural shape and
to keep the plants at a desired size so that they do not outgrow their
landscape value too quickly, I heard on my constant companion, a Sony
40-year commemorative edition transistor radio, a most curious story.
The radio announcer guy disclosed that libraries are becoming a meeting
places for singles! It seems that while surreptitiously scanning the
shelves for literature, many dates are arranged. Egads! How has this
trend escaped my attention? Perhaps 18 years of marriage may have had
something to do with it. More ...

No reason for concern
Lewisboro has been astoundingly quiet in recent months. Board members
are generally working in a cooperative and collaborative manner. Fewer
residents are attending public governmental meetings, and those who do
are less critical than in previous years. Even the once-saturated prime
real estate of the opinion pages of this newspaper has grown as dry as
the housing market. More ...

Nobody died in the wetlands
Sometimes you don’t need a long stay in the passenger terminal of
American Airlines at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport to make you appreciate
the well-intentioned, if misplaced, priorities of government
regulators. Sometimes all it takes is a letter to the editors from a
Lewisboro building inspector. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you get both.
This is one of those times. More ...

Library on fast track to nowhere
You might have noticed that it is now April 2008, and Lewisboro still
doesn’t have a new or expanded library. Nor has there been a single
shovelful of dirt or a single nail driven by a single hammer. When I
came to this realization, I didn’t think it was that big a deal, since
I remembered writing about the library just a few months ago. But the
mind plays tricks, and when I checked, I was surprised to discover that
the last time I discussed the library was February 8, 2007 — well more
than a year ago. At that point, I was lamenting the fact that the
library board had no choice but to agree to move to the town park,
since it had run into a dead end in attempts to expand in South Salem
hamlet. So, what has happened since then? More ...
