Westchester Science and Engineering Fair
Eight students receive awards
From astronomy to physics, biology to computer science, the students in
John Jay High School’s science research program are doing college and
graduate-level science. Last month, eight seniors from the program
attended the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair, each bringing
home medals for their projects, with one — finalist Dan Barson — set to
go on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 11-17
in Atlanta, Ga., where he will compete with more than 1,500 students
from around the world.
“It’s supposed to be an extraordinary experience,” Dan told The Ledger.
“It’s the premiere opportunity for someone who wants to go into
science.” More ...

John Jay Middle School student Brianna Wuensch
Born with dancing in her blood
At 2, she wanted to start dancing. At 3, she took her first class. She
was winning dance titles by the time she was 6, and now, at 12, Brianna
Wuensch has won too many awards to list. The John Jay Middle School
seventh grade student was recently crowned Junior Miss That’s
Entertainment and Miss Pre-teen Sophisticated overall title soloist.
“I don’t know what made me want to start dancing — I guess it was just
in my blood when I was born,” Brianna told The Ledger. “When I compete,
it’s not for people to know that I’m the best, it’s because I love to
dance.” More ...

36 students take part in 2008 science fair
The projects ranged from engineering to biology, exploring topics as
diverse as the environmental effects of paintball to the life cycle of
the monarch butterfly to violin-related injuries. Last Wednesday, March
5, about 36 students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades gathered
in the John Jay Middle School dining room to display the products of
their work at the 25th Annual John Jay Middle School Science Fair.
“The quality of the student work was exceptional,” said district
Director of Science Vincent Bell in a release. “The effort and
thoroughness of the research was impressive, and the oral presentations
showed confidence and a depth of understanding of each topic.” More ...

John Jay High School Vocal Jazz
Students sing traditional jazz at music festival
Seven years ago, John Jay High School teacher Steven Morse began an
experimental new singing group at the school: Vocal Jazz. Starting as
an extension of the chorale program that Mr. Morse ran on the side,
this year Vocal Jazz was made an official school group. And at the
beginning of February, the 17 students of Vocal Jazz brought their
music to the Berklee College of Music’s High School Jazz Festival in
Boston. Singing traditional jazz songs, both with and without a rhythm
section, Vocal Jazz placed seventh out of 16 groups in their division,
despite being ranked against schools where jazz singing is a part of
the music curriculum.

At Meadow Pond Elementary School
Students w
ork to help Chinese preschool
Last April, Meadow Pond Elementary School teachers Denise Martabano and
Tricia Castellone traveled to Beijing, China, to bring a delivery of
alphabet and counting books created by their students to a local
preschool. This year, they are aiming to repeat the project, using it
to teach their kindergarten and third grade students about China,
charity and writing.
“For four- and five-year-olds, they’re blowing us away with what
they’re remembering and what they can do,” said Ms. Castellone. As part
of the “We Have Buddies in China, Too!” project, the children not only
researched China to decide what types of examples to use in the books,
they began communicating with students in China, developing an e-mail
based pen-pal relationship with a fourth grade student in Beijing named
Luiyi. More ...

Take Back Our World at John Jay Middle School
Students 'adopt' Wolf Conservation Center
Students at John Jay Middle School will soon be taking back their
world, by helping the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem to raise
and breed endangered wolves.
The Wolf Conservation Center was chosen after students listened to a
presentation for Take Back Our World, a project organized by the Center
for SCREEN-TIME Awareness, which also organizes the annual TV Turnoff
Week. Representatives from five local nonprofit organizations — The
Friends of Karen, Camp Sunshine, March of Dimes, Operation Smile, and
the Wolf Conservation Center — addressed the students during an

John Jay High School theater program
Students learn to tap for spring musical
The next spring musical at John Jay High School will require a little
bit of extra work from its performers: For Crazy for You, a musical by
George and Ira Gershwin, many of the cast members will be required to
learn to tap dance.
To prepare potential cast members for the play, arts booster club Arts
Alive! sponsored a five-session weekly tap dance lesson at the high
school, taught by dance teacher and former Broadway dancer Anne-Marie
Galler of Goldens Bridge. Ms. Galler, who teaches at Dance Cavise in
Mamaroneck, will be choreographing the show for the school, as she has
for previous musicals Pippin and Children of Eden. More ...
