The projects ranged from engineering to biology, exploring topics as diverse as the environmental effects of paintball to the life cycle of the monarch butterfly to violin-related injuries. Last Wednesday, March 5, about 36 students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades gathered in the John Jay Middle School dining room to display the products of their work at the 25th Annual John Jay Middle School Science Fair.

“The quality of the student work was exceptional,” said district Director of Science Vincent Bell in a release. “The effort and thoroughness of the research was impressive, and the oral presentations showed confidence and a depth of understanding of each topic.”

In the seventh and eighth grades, three students were honored as having “outstanding” projects, and three more were given honorable mention. In the seventh grade, the projects by Dennis Devey, Daniel Fulop and Nick Ross were named as outstanding, while Matthew Herman, Dan McLaughlin and Brandon Lee were given honorable mention. In the eighth grade, the outstanding projects were created by Peter Baron, Joyce Pogge and Brian Porco, with Tal Cohen-Weinberg, Michael Rosenthal and Brennan Spellacy received honorable mention.

All of the students whose projects were named as outstanding will go on to the Tri-County Science Fair, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at John F. Kennedy High School in Somers.

In addition to the primary awards, two special awards were presented. The middle school PTO presented its annual three-year participation award to students that have taken part in the science fair for all three years of middle school. This year, the award went to Peter Baron, Elyssa Kohlhagen, Trevor Lovitz, Joyce Pogge and Brennan Spellacy.

A new award for 2008, the environmental award, was presented by the Lewisboro Land Trust. This award, given to students “whose projects are outstanding and offer an appreciation for nature, beauty and the fragility of our planet,” was given to seventh grade students Daniel Fulop, Nick Ross and Spencer Schell, and eighth grade student Tal Cohen-Weinberg.
