Patriots Day is June 10
John Jay Homestead State Historic Site in Katonah will be hosting its second annual Patriots Day on Sunday, June 10, from noon to 4. Admission is $15 per car.
Each year, Patriots Day honors a different founding father or mother. This year, Patriots Day will be celebrating the life and times of John Jay’s friend and co-patriot, John Paul Jones — regarded by many to be the most courageous and well-known American naval hero of the Revolutionary War. Famous for having said, “I have not yet begun to fight,” Jones is today regarded as the father of the U.S. Navy. Two hundred thirty years ago, though, he was regarded by the British as an outlaw and pirate.
The day’s events will feature performances by the Mount Kisco Scottish Pipes and Drums Band, dressed in full Scottish regalia. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society will demonstrate Scottish country reel dancing, while the New York Celtic Dancers and the Craig sisters from Somers will perform ancient Scottish highland dancing. Robert Mourland of Wireharp Productions will provide Gaelic music and storytelling. Historic juggling will be performed by John Gramaldi. Officers of the U.S. Navy will talk with children and adults about American naval history. Swashbuckling sword fighting will be demonstrated by the Fishkill Fencers. The group is also inviting all experienced fencers from around the area to participate in a tournament that will take place on the grounds that day. Information: fishkillfencers.com.
Rusty the Pirate will also be on hand to entertain kids, as will Bob the Blacksmith, and “Patriot,” the K-9 police dog of the Greenburgh Police Department. There will also be nautically themed arts and crafts, pony rides and a seaworthy treasure hunt. There also will be food.
Patriot Bank is sponsoring a chance for children to win the prize hidden in the pirates’ secret treasure chest. Upon admission, children receive a key to the chest, but only one will unlock the surprise inside.
