Torzilli, John Jay bounce back
With Gaby Torzilli turning in back-to-back one-hit shutouts, the John Jay softball team emerged from its mini-slump with solid wins over Port Chester and Harrison this past week.
The Indians (7-4) host Tappan Zee, one of the better teams in Section 1, today at 4:13, and will hold their annual Jay Fest tournament on Friday and Saturday in Cross River.
The games are part of a two-week stretch in which John Jay plays nine games.
“This week and next week will really tell us where we stand,” said head coach Joe Mammoser, whose squad had lost four of five games before the two wins. “The girls continue to work hard. They know we have some potential to do pretty well. We have a chance to do well in the playoffs if we continue to play as a team.”

Jay rebounds, routs Suffern
These are the games that John Jay boys lacrosse head coach Nick Savastano feels will make his Indians a better team in the long run.
Niskayuna’s defense shut down the potent John Jay offense and got 15 saves in goal from James Manchester and held on for a 9-5 win over the Indians on May 3 at Union College in Schenectady.

Indians roll to three more victories
The John Jay baseball team ran its winning streak to seven straight last week with three lopsided wins.
The week started last Thursday with a 12-0 rout of Port Chester, and Friday’s 10-2 win over Port Chester was the 10th win of the season for the Indians.
After Saturday’s 10-1 win over Keio, John Jay’s record stood at 11-1.
“We’re enjoying it so far,” said head coach Geoff Curtis, who is taking nothing for granted as the Indians head into the second half of the season.
“The next game is more important than the last games,” he said. “You take it one game at a time. You’ve got to take care of every single pitch, every single hit, every single at bat.”
In the win over Keio, John Swertfager notched his fourth win of the season as he went five innings, allowing four hits and three walks, and only one run.

Nohilly wins Leatherman's Loop
Tom Nohilly celebrated his 41st birthday on Sunday in special fashion, as the Katonah resident was the winner of the 22nd Annual Leatherman’s Loop trail race in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River.
It was the fourth time Nohilly has won the 6.2-mile race, which traverses the fields, forests, streams, and hills of the reservation. He took advantage of the driest conditions in memory to complete the race in a time of 39:01. Julio German of Greenwich, Conn., was second, in a time of 41:59, and Christopher Hojlo of New York City was third, in 42:01.
Kristin Simonsen of Norwalk, Conn., running the Loop for the first time, was the first female finisher, in a time of 48:02.
The year’s race, which had a field of 840 finishers, marked the end of an era as Tony Godino handed over race director duties to Mike Paletta. Godino, who was one of the Loop’s co-founders and had been race director for 21 years, was on hand to help out and ran the race for the first time in 12 years.

Indians beat Harrison twice in Florida
Through seven games, the John Jay baseball team showed its offensive power as the Indians averaged 13 runs per game and batted .405 as team in opening the season at 6-1.
But when the Indians could muster only four hits and two runs on Monday against Harrison, they showed they can beat teams with their pitching, too.
With Chris Eidam, the team’s number-three starter, hurling a two-hitter, John Jay managed to up its record to 7-1 with a 2-1 victory.
The game was played at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., as part of the team’s vacation-week trip. The Indians had defeated Harrison there on Sunday night, too, by a score of 11-4.

Bocklet breaks two scoring records
as Indians roll to three more wins
John Jay senior attackman Chris Bocklet is glad that it is all over and that he and his teammates can now move on.
With a goal midway through the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Fox Lane, the 167th of Bocklet’s high school career, the senior became John Jay’s all-time leading goal scorer.
That was for openers. In the third quarter, when his pass was converted into a goal by senior Harrison Jones, the assist gave Bocklet 268 career points and the top spot on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Bocklet finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists, as the Indians romped to an 18-3 win over the Foxes at home.
“This really feels good,” Bocklet said after the game. “It’s a nice thing to have. I’ve worked hard over the years and I have had a lot of great teammates that have helped me accomplish this. It is nice to have it.”
After John Jay’s 12-7 win over Duxbury, Mass., on Monday, Bocklet career marks stand at 167 goals and 269 points.
The previous career goal-scoring mark of 166 had stood for 12 years, having been set in 1996 by Ryan Kamerdin. The career points record of 267 had stood for 20 years, having been set by 1988 graduate Marty Kelly.

Torzilli throws two no-hitters
Two weeks into the season, Gaby Torzilli is off to about as good a start as any John Jay softball player has ever produced.
Over 20 innings and three games this past week, the senior pitcher allowed only one hit in three shutout wins — including two no-hitters — to help the Indians improve to 4-0 on the young season.
Torzilli is now 4-0 on the season and has allowed only four hits and no earned runs, while striking out 48, over 27 innings of work.
That was expected, but what has coach Joe Mammoser impressed is the play of Torzilli’s surrounding cast.

Indians, Greeley play to a draw
As time ticked down in a back-and-forth battle between the John Jay and Greeley girls lacrosse teams on April 15, it seemed likely that whoever got the last shot would win the game.
And in the waning seconds, it looked like that team would be Greeley, as Courtney Miller took a restart inside midfield with 12 seconds to play and used her speed to avoid a John Jay triple team. She burst to the middle and fired a bullet from about 10 yards out.
But John Jay goalie Leigh Herzog, who had already played a tremendous game, denied the Quakers the dramatic win as she got a piece of the ball, which then deflected off the post with about six seconds left.
So, despite feeling they had let the game slip away, the Indians had to be happy, and relieved, to leave Greeley’s field with a 10-10 tie.
