Torzilli throws two no-hitters

Two weeks into the season, Gaby Torzilli is off to about as good a start as any John Jay softball player has ever produced.
Over 20 innings and three games this past week, the senior pitcher allowed only one hit in three shutout wins — including two no-hitters — to help the Indians improve to 4-0 on the young season.
Torzilli is now 4-0 on the season and has allowed only four hits and no earned runs, while striking out 48, over 27 innings of work.
That was expected, but what has coach Joe Mammoser impressed is the play of Torzilli’s surrounding cast.
“We have a very good mix of older players and a bunch of younger girls. They’re working very, very hard. They’re coachable. Obviously, they’re talented,” said Mammoser after John Jay’s 2-0 win at Nyack on Tuesday. “We can do a lot more this year because of the type of athletes they are and type of softball players they are.”
The Indians’ great start is something for the team to build on, he said, going into a tough stretch of games next week.
“I’m not surprised but I’m pleased,” he said. “The more experience they get, they better they’ll be. We’re playing good now but we want to play great at the end of the season.”
In Tuesday’s win, Torzilli just missed out on a perfect game as she allowed no hits or walks. Nyack’s only base runner reached on an error. She struck out 11.
The teams were tied 0-0 going into the top of the sixth, when John Jay took advantage of some Nyack miscues to score the game’s first run. Caroline Dewar started things off by reaching on an error, advancing to second on an overthrow. She went to third on a sacrifice fly by Jackie Finn and scored on a passed ball.
The Indians added an insurance run in the seventh as Paige Garafolo walked and Tori Simonetti and Julie Klimberg both singled to load the bases with one out. Amanda Antenucci then hit a hard liner to third, which was dropped, and Garafolo beat the throw home to score.
John Jay managed only three hits on the day, but the fact the Indians consistently put the bat on the ball was encouraging to Mammoser.
“We only had four strikeouts. We were hitting the ball, but they were all pop-ups,” he said.
Finn, Klimberg and Simonetti had the hits for John Jay, while Garafolo and Torzilli each had a walk.
The Indians were coming off a 9-0 win over Nyack last Friday at home, as Torzilli threw a one-hit shutout. She struck out 14 and walked none.
Dewar (3-for-4, double, run), Emily Forese (3-for-3, double, 2 RBI, run) and Garafolo (3-for-4, double, three runs) each had three hits to lead the offense, while Finn (2-for-3, double, walk, run), Simonetti (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Torzilli (2-for-4, double, triple, 3 RBI, two runs) each had two hits. Mangione also had a hit and Klimberg scored a run.
Last Wednesday, John Jay routed Fox Lane at home, 15-0, as Torzilli fired a no-hitter and walked none over six innings. She also struck out nine.
Dewar was 3-for-5 and scored twice to lead the offense, with two hits each from Garafolo (2-for-3, 3 RBI, double, walk, run), Finn (2-for-3, run, RBI) and Simonetti (2-for-3, 3 RBI, double, run). Getting one hit each were Mangione (two runs, RBI, walk), Klimberg (RBI), Sam Fowler (RBI), Forese (run), and Antenucci (run). Torzilli walked twice and scored two runs, with other walks by Kristen Voorhees (run), Melinda Ferris, Laura Eidam, and Christine Causa (run).
