Torzilli, John Jay bounce back

With Gaby Torzilli turning in back-to-back one-hit shutouts, the John Jay softball team emerged from its mini-slump with solid wins over Port Chester and Harrison this past week.
The Indians (7-4) host Tappan Zee, one of the better teams in Section 1, today at 4:13, and will hold their annual Jay Fest tournament on Friday and Saturday in Cross River.
Friday’s first-round games feature New Rochelle against Hen Hud at 3:45, followed by John Jay against Putnam Valley.
On Saturday, the consolation game is at 1 and the championship game at 3.
The games are part of a two-week stretch in which John Jay plays nine games.
“This week and next week will really tell us where we stand,” said head coach Joe Mammoser, whose squad had lost four of five games before the two wins. “The girls continue to work hard. They know we have some potential to do pretty well. We have a chance to do well in the playoffs if we continue to play as a team.”
Having an ace like Torzilli, of course, always gives John Jay a chance. In last week’s two wins, she allowed a total of only two hits and three walks, while striking out 28.
“Gaby was dominant,” said Mammoser.
In last Thursday’s 14-0 win at home over Port Chester, Torzilli threw a one-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts and no walks.
The Indians had one of their best offensive showings, with 18 hits. Three players had four hits: Caroline Dewar (4-for-5, three runs), Torzilli (4-for-4, double, triple, 4 RBI, three runs) and Paige Garafolo (4-for-4, double triple, 4 RBI, three runs).
Jackie Finn was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and three runs scored. Also getting hits were Laura Eidam (2 RBI), Emily Forese (walk, run), Melinda Ferris (RBI, run), and Amanda Mangione (run).
On Monday, John Jay jumped out to an early 5-0 lead at Harrison after two innings, and rode Torzilli’s one-hitter to a 7-0 win.
Mammoser was impressed with how the Indians kept up their level of play once they got the early lead.
“We played as a team. We stayed focused.”
Torzilli issued two walks and had 12 strikeouts.
Dewar was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Mangione was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Getting one hit each were Tori Simonetti (2 RBI, run), Garafolo (run), Emily Forese, and Finn (double). Julie Klimberg had an RBI and scored a run.
