Indians roll to three more victories
|
The John Jay baseball team ran its winning streak to seven straight last week with three lopsided wins.
The week started last Thursday with a 12-0 rout of Port Chester, and Friday’s 10-2 win over Port Chester was the 10th win of the season for the Indians.
After Saturday’s 10-1 win over Keio, John Jay’s record stood at 11-1.
“We’re enjoying it so far,” said head coach Geoff Curtis, who is taking nothing for granted as the Indians head into the second half of the season.
“The next game is more important than the last games,” he said. “You take it one game at a time. You’ve got to take care of every single pitch, every single hit, every single at bat.”
In the win over Keio, John Swertfager notched his fourth win of the season as he went five innings, allowing four hits and three walks, and only one run. He struck out eight.
The Indians took a 3-1 lead into the top of the sixth but blew the game open with seven runs.
Ryan Mitchell capped off a big week as he went 4-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI and run scored. In John Jay’s three wins, Mitchell was 7-for-10.
Anthony Iacomini reached base three times with two singles and a hit by pitch, and scored twice. J.K. Filauro had a two-run single, and Alan Filauro and Swertfager both singled and scored.
Ray Maggi scored two runs, while Lou Ricci walked, scored and had an RBI. Kyle Clemmenson also scored
Jared Hirschberg closed the game out with a scoreless sixth, allowing no hits or walks.
On Thursday, the first game of the two-game series against Port Chester was played at John Jay.
The Indians blew thing open with an eight-run second inning, highlighted by a Iacomini’s grand slam homer to deep center field.
Eric Rhodes had two triples and 2 RBI and scored twice. Also getting hits were J.K. Filauro (double, run), Mike Filice (RBI), Greg Gardiner (two runs, walk), Mitchell (RBI, run), and Alan Filauro (double, walk, two runs, RBI). Maggi and Swertfager both walked twice.
Steve Green improved his record to 5-0 as he went four innings, allowing no runs, one hit and three walks, while striking out three.
Ricci closed out the final three innings, allowing no runs, one hit and one walk.
On Friday in Port Chester, the Indians got another strong effort on the mound, this time from Chris Eidam, who went five innings and allowed three hits, two walks and two runs to notch his second win.
Clemmenson and Mitchell were the stars at the plate as both went 3-for-3. Clemmenson had a double and 3 RBI and scored twice, while Mitchell doubled and scored twice.
Also getting hits were Ricci (triple, run), Rhodes (walk), Sean Lowe, Green (2 RBI, run), and Filice (RBI, run).
Alan Filauro (hit by pitch), Iacomini (walk) and J.K. Filauro (walk, hit by pitch) all scored runs, while Maggi had 2 RBI and Teddy Tsgaris walked.
