Valentine's Day:
If you’re reading this for gift ideas, you’re quickly running out of time
Valentine’s Day — that reddish-pink blip on winter’s dreary radar —
arrives every February 14, yet often gets pushed to the backs of minds
and schedules until that dreaded last minute. Ensuing gift-finding
frenzies can turn thoughtful intentions into amorous clichés and result
in a less-than-perfect evening.
This year, skip that.
The following is a guide to finding local, last-minute expressions of
new found affection or vintage intimacy that appeal to all five senses,
of which St. Valentine himself would have approved.
Taste
For Francos Wine Merchants owner and oenophile Rick Franco, nothing
says Valentine’s Day — or rather whispers it sweetly — like champagne.

Faces of Hope:
New Canaan resident walks in the path of AIDS in Africa
While a postgraduate student at both Columbia and New York
universities, Maria Crocitto Carpi studied hard and worked three jobs.
But when Saturday night rolled around, the bubbly blonde laced up her
sneakers, grabbed some garbage bags, hiked to the local bakery on the
Upper West Side and, just before closing, demanded all the bread they
had left.
Even in her “early days,” when she spent her weekends volunteering at
homeless shelters, the now-mother of two felt “a tremendous pull to
helping beyond ourselves.”

Stepping into history:
Saxe revisits the American Revolution
Instead of listening to lectures and reading books, Saxe fifth graders recently learned their history lessons by loading cannons and donning petticoats.
With help from reenactors in the Fifth Connecticut Regiment, the students stepped back in time Friday, April 20, to the summer of 1776.
“The primary purpose of the day is to reinforce what we teach in our social studies curriculum as well as our reading curriculum,” fifth grader teacher Christian White told the
Advertiser.

NCHS welcomes teacher after tour of duty in Iraq
Anyone who believes chivalry is dead hasn't met Tony Barnett.
A father, husband, New Canaan High School teacher, volunteer
firefighter and returning warrior from Iraq, the 32-year-old Hamden
resident lives his life with three things in mind — family, community,
country.
After a year-long tour of duty dodging bullets and reconstructing vital
services in the Middle East, he returned to civilian life and his
portable physics classroom — at least for now — last month. He has
worked at the high school since 2003.
