Emergency practice
May 22, 2008

Saturday was a scary day around New Canaan High School. None of the situations were real, but the implications and consequences certainly could be.

Emergency responders tested their skills in three drills, back-to-back-to-back, involving shootings and explosives at New Canaan High School. The simulations and emotions were as real as they could be. It was easy to visualize what an actual emergency could be like, and difficult to imagine the scope of the terror.

New Canaan’s responders learned Saturday — lessons they hope they’ll never need to implement. But the drill, and continuing, regular practice — from mass casualty incidents such as this scenario to routine occurrences like accidents and injuries — will enhance readiness for any situation.
