New Canaan Inn resident third in poetry contest

New Canaan Inn resident Louise Besson was the third place finalist in a recent statewide poetry competition sponsored by Connecticut Community Care, Inc., and was honored with a special reception for the winners at the Aqua Turf of Plantsville.

Her winning poem, “Robins in January,” was inspired by a simple yet idyllic view she spied through one of the Inn’s picture windows.

“One day while walking past the windows that overlook the waterfall near our dining room, I noticed unusual activity,” said Mrs. Besson. “Upon further inspection I noticed dozens of robins frolicking and was inspired.”

As a result, the 95-year-old who ordinarily writes prose composed the award-winning piece. She secretly submitted her poem after being given an application by Barbara Jeffries, assistant director of Resident Services at New Canaan Inn, who also coordinates the Inn’s active Writers Group.

Upon being notified of her third-place prize, Mrs. Besson said, “I was both surprised and overjoyed to hear that my first poem had been so well received.”

Mrs. Besson is writing her second book about her life. She also plays bridge and swims at the New Canaan YMCA every Wednesday.

Located at 73 Oenoke Ridge in New Canaan, New Canaan Inn offers independent living through Waveny Care Network. Additional information is available at 594-5200 or waveny.org.
