The State Department of Transportation Garage near Exit 37 of the
Merritt Parkway was heavily damaged in a fire Friday morning, May 9.
Fire Marshal Fred Baker said at the scene today that he responded shortly after 4 a.m., when the second alarm for firefighters sounded.
He said three trucks parked inside the DOT garage sustained heavy damage, and that the integrity of the structure may have been compromised.
The garage is located between Gerdes Road and the rest area on the southbound Merritt Parkway. Between the damaged structure and Gerdes Road is a salt shed scheduled to be replaced.
Further details will be posted as they become available.
