How do I find a day-care facility for my child?

All day-care centers should be licensed by the state and that license should be displayed. For information on which facilities are licensed, call the state’s day care licensing office at 800-282-6063.
Child care facilities should also display the fire marshal’s inspection certificate and the center’s discipline policy and complaint procedure.
What kind of permits or certification do day-care centers need?
Day-care centers fall into three categories: Family day-care homes, group day-care homes and child day-care centers, which also include nursery schools. Stringent requirements must be met to become licensed, including permits from the state Department of Health Services and zoning, building, fire, and health permits. To advertise for family day-care, caretakers must list license numbers.
What before- or after-school activities are there?
The Park and Recreation Department offers an after-school program every day school is in session for students in middle and elementary school. Extended Day runs from when school dismisses (12:40 for kindergarten-age children) until 6 p.m. There are also dismissal times at 2:40 and 4 p.m. Sign-ups begin in July. Many major sports are offered, including baseball, football, field hockey, floor hockey, karate, lacrosse, softball, soccer, gymnastics, Ultimate Frisbee, golf instruction, flag football, and cheerleading. Is there an ice skating rink? What does it offer?
There aren’t any in Redding but the Winter Garden at 111 Prospect Ridge Road, Ridgefield, is open for public skating from September to late May. There is a seasonal hockey league for youths and summer hockey camp. Call the rink at 438-4423 for information on family memberships.
