Mary Brooks, former resident

Mary Hope Lupfer Brooks, formerly of Redding, died at Piper Shores in Scarborough, Maine, on March 15, 2008. Mrs. Brooks, 84, was the wife of 49 years of Shelton A. Brooks.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1923 in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Robert N. and Ella M. Lupfer. She attended school in Springfield, Walnut Hill School in Needham, Mass., and graduated from Vassar College. She then worked as a research assistant at Johns Hopkins Hospital of Baltimore.

In 1959, Hope and Shelton A. Brooks were married in Covenant Presbyterian Church in Springfield. Until their recent move to Scarborough, Maine, the Brookses lived in Manhattan and in Redding.

Mrs. Brooks was an active member of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years. She was a longtime board member of St. Christopher’s School in Westchester County, N.Y., and an active member of the Cosmopolitan Club. An enthusiastic “birder,” she was a member of a Central Park bird watching group as well as the Connecticut Audubon Society.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son Robert, of Cambria, Calif.; nieces Jane L. Crowder of Visalia, Calif., Sally L. Cisler of Springfield, and Caroline L. Kurtz of Missoula, Mont.; a nephew Jonathan B. Lupfer of Cambridge, Mass.; and a sister-in-law, Sally Lupfer of Lexington, Mass. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Edgar B. Lupfer and Joseph M. Lupfer, both of Springfield.

A memorial service will be held at Piper Shores at a future date. Memorial gifts in Mrs. Brooks’ name may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church of Springfield, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
