What looked to be a close match on paper was more of a one-sided affair
when the Joel Barlow High girls tennis team hosted Lauralton Hall.
The fact that both teams had undefeated records apparently did not
matter to the Falcons once the action got underway, Most of the
individual contests resulted in one-sided wins as the Falcons prevailed
6-1 last Wednesday, April 30.
It was a far closer match than the one the Falcons had when they
visited Immaculate the next day. Five of the of the seven divisions
ended in shutouts, including all of the singles matches, as Barlow won
7-0.
In both cases the Falcons dominated first singles. Staying

Playing difficult matches against certain South-West Conference
opponents is nothing new to the Joel Barlow High boys tennis team. It
looks like it can add another name to that list.
Visiting Bunnell on Monday, the Falcons had their hands full in several
contests. It all came down to one match that went to three sets before
the scales were tipped in their favor for a 4-3 win.
The Bulldogs were strong in the singles department, winning half of
these matches, including the number one spot. Here, Eric DeAza defeated
Morgan Pinter 6-2, 6-4.
One of Barlow’s wins came at second singles, which featured Zack
Rosenfeld getting the best of Mike Cox with a 6-4, 6-1 result. Charles
Lillicraf also had the advantage at third singles

What was originally a slow start soon turned into a scoring festival
for the Joe, Barlow High boys varsity lacrosse team when it hosted
Pomperaug.
The Falcons were held to just one goal in the opening frame on
Thursday, May 1. They more than made up for this in the middle frame,
pulling out of reach of the competition in an eventual 14-10 win last
Thursday, May 1.

Falcons split meet
by Andrew Horvath
In some events the Joel Barlow High boys track team was clearly dominant. In others it could have used some points.
Hosting Bunnell last Wednesday, April 30, the Falcons stayed close to
the defending South-West Conference champs but in the end came up short
79-71. It had little to worry about from Immaculate, however, in a
dominating 137-12 win.
“We did the best we could,” said Barlow coach Jerry Bielizna. “We just didn’t have the depth to get Bunnell.”

While its strength would earn it valuable points in some areas the Joel
Barlow High girls track team needed some in others when it hosted
undefeated Bunnell.
The Falcons had the upper hand in certain events, such as the relays
and throwing events Bunnell was dominant in the sprints and jumps. It
did not fare badly in the remaining events as well, amassing enough
points for a 74-56 win on Thursday, May 1.
“I knew they would be a strong team,” said Barlow head coach Dan Spinner. “We held our own in the field events.”
Barlow had little to worry about Immaculate, which was also at

The little miscues would add up against the Weston High boys varsity lacrosse team in its game at Newtown.
A couple of mental mistakes, some errant passes and ground balls that
got away all tilted the scales away from the Trojans. While they did
threaten the Nighthawks early on they could not hold on, losing 12-8
last Thursday, May 1, at Blue and Gold Stadium.

Since the start of the season the Joel Barlow High varsity softball
team was still waiting to get hits at key times despite playing several
opponents to some close games.
That would change when the Falcons hosted Danbury last week. As in
their previous games they trailed at one point. This time they got the
offense they needed to erase the deficit and hang onto a 3-2 win, their
first of the season, on Tuesday, April 22.

Darkness suspends close contest
by Sidd Finch
Daylight gave out before the Joel Barlow High varsity baseball team did in its game against New Milford last week.
With the score tied at 3-3 after seven innings the contest went into
extra frames. Fourteen had been completed with neither side able to
break the stalemate, forcing play to be suspended on account of
darkness on Friday, April 25. It will continue later in the season.
Coming into the week Barlow knew what it had to do to regain the early
season success it enjoyed: stop making as many fielding errors.
However, the Falcons were not able to do that as they lost 7-2 to
Brookfield last Monday, April 21.

Tigers, Rebels fall to Falcons
by Margaret O’Leary
The Joel Barlow High girls lacrosse team met the challenge of its tough
schedule last week. Playing three games in as many days against several
staunch opponents, the Falcons rose to the occasion and put an end to
their short losing streak.
Despite losing a 20-17 decision to Brookfield last Tuesday, April 22,
the Falcons held their own against the Bobcats. The game was a
hard-fought battle until the very end, when the Bobcats finally pulled
just out of the Falcons’ reach. Yet, Barlow never gave up and played
hard until the last whistle sounded.

Anxious to play on its home course, the Joel Barlow High golf team did not waste the opportunity last week.
The Falcons, who had their first two home matches postponed, took to the Redding Country Club on Tuesday, April 22, when they hosted Notre Dame of Fairfield. While scores were a little higher than those in their first two matches, the Falcons had plenty of breathing room in a 188-219 win.
Peter Valenti led the team with a 45. Alex Hayes was right behind, shooting a 46.
“These are two freshmen who have great potential,” said Barlow coach Jim Dolan. “There’s a good chance they’ll stay in the lineup the entire year.”
Trevor Hirst was one stroke later with a 47. Nick Flynn finished the scoring with a 50, one stroke ahead of Alex Kozloff.
It was a busy week for the Falcons, who played three matches at home in as many days, including one against Bethel on Wednesday, The caliber of the competition improved, as did Barlow’s
