Anxious to play on its home course, the Joel Barlow High golf team did not waste the opportunity last week.

The Falcons, who had their first two home matches postponed, took to the Redding Country Club on Tuesday, April 22, when they hosted Notre Dame of Fairfield. While scores were a little higher than those in their first two matches, the Falcons had plenty of breathing room in a 188-219 win.

Peter Valenti led the team with a 45. Alex Hayes was right behind, shooting a 46.

“These are two freshmen who have great potential,” said Barlow coach Jim Dolan. “There’s a good chance they’ll stay in the lineup the entire year.”

Trevor Hirst was one stroke later with a 47. Nick Flynn finished the scoring with a 50, one stroke ahead of Alex Kozloff.

It was a busy week for the Falcons, who played three matches at home in as many days, including one against Bethel on Wednesday, The caliber of the competition improved, as did Barlow’s scores in a 182-193 win.

Once again the team had the medalist. This time it was Flynn with a 41.

The match marked the first time Barlow started three freshmen. Hayes was next in the order with a 46, one stroke ahead of Valenti.

Freshman Lars Wallin followed in turn with a 48, one stroke ahead of Hirst.

“With a young team, any team we beat is a big win.”

A makeup match against Masuk last Thursday featured Barlow’s best scores to date, which came in handy as it held off the visitors 174-177.

Hayes was the medalist this time with a two-over-par 38. Flynn followed with a 41.

Hirst and Valenti completed the scoring for Barlow with rounds of 47 and 48 respectively.

Barlow, now 4-2, visits Immaculate at Richter Park in Danbury today (Thursday), visits Weston at the Connecticut Golf Club on Monday, hosts Pomperaug on Tuesday and is at home against Newtown on Wednesday.
