Playing difficult matches against certain South-West Conference opponents is nothing new to the Joel Barlow High boys tennis team. It looks like it can add another name to that list.

Visiting Bunnell on Monday, the Falcons had their hands full in several contests. It all came down to one match that went to three sets before the scales were tipped in their favor for a 4-3 win.

The Bulldogs were strong in the singles department, winning half of these matches, including the number one spot. Here, Eric DeAza defeated Morgan Pinter 6-2, 6-4.

One of Barlow’s wins came at second singles, which featured Zack Rosenfeld getting the best of Mike Cox with a 6-4, 6-1 result. Charles Lillicraf also had the advantage at third singles, beating Brendan Ferguson 6-1, 6-3.

Things were closer at fourth singles before D.J. Varasik outlasted Barlow’s Brian Kriedberg 6-4, 6-4 as each side amassed two singles wins.

The doubles matches would play a big role in the outcome of the match and the Falcons had the advantage here, taking two of three, including the number one spot. Blake Kramer and Harrison Ahluwalia gave up only three games in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jon Dinihanian and David Pisano.

A win at second doubles kept the Bulldogs in the match as Greg Regis and James Bisak defeated John Montgomery and Alex Coleman 6-1, 6-4. With both sides needing the number three doubles match for the win it was appropriate that it went to three sets.

The Falcons’ Harry Wheeler and Adam Jacobs held off Spencer Law and Greg Luca 7-6 in the opener but the Bunnell pair bounced back in the next to force a third. By then Wheeler and Jacobs were back in control and took control for the 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win.

“The boys came through,” said Barlow head coach Tom Cable. “IT was looking a little close for a little while. They did a nice job.”

Barlow had it a lot easier when it hosted Immaculate last Thursday, May 1. They swept one contest and just missed doing so in two others before ending with a 6-1 win.

Pinter gave up only two games in beating Matt Rogers 6-1, 6-1. Rosenfeld nearly shut out Matt Carr in a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Moving up to third singles, Kriedberg had an easy time with Adrian Tucker and almost got the sweep in a 6-0, 6-1 win. The Mustangs’ only win was at fourth singles when Steve Lardner defeated Coleman 6-2, 6-3.

Posting identical scores from the Bunnell match, Kramer and Ahluwalia were again 6-2, 6-1 winners, this time over Connor Bennfield and Connor King. Wheeler and Newbert moved up to second doubles and had no trouble in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Morgan Diamant and Chip Collins.

Montgomery and Jacobs teamed up for third doubles but got the win by forfeit when Immaculate did not have enough players to fill this spot.

The Falcons, now 6-3 overall, visit Notre Dame today (Thursday) and host Weston on Friday before finishing the regular season on Wednesday at Bethel.
