What looked to be a close match on paper was more of a one-sided affair when the Joel Barlow High girls tennis team hosted Lauralton Hall.
The fact that both teams had undefeated records apparently did not matter to the Falcons once the action got underway, Most of the individual contests resulted in one-sided wins as the Falcons prevailed 6-1 last Wednesday, April 30.
It was a far closer match than the one the Falcons had when they visited Immaculate the next day. Five of the of the seven divisions ended in shutouts, including all of the singles matches, as Barlow won 7-0.
In both cases the Falcons dominated first singles. Staying unbeaten, Jen Holzberg had back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 shutouts, the first coming over Lauralton’s Amanda Teplen. She did likewise to Immaculate’s Sarah Deisenroth.
Barlow also posted a couple of easy wins at second singles, which featured Melanie Reyes beating Patricia Culligan 6-0, 6-0. She then swept Immaculate’s Jen Pietras 6-0, 6-0.
The Falcons’ only loss of the week came at third singles. Although Randa Dreznick came up short 7-6, 6-2 to Lauralton’s Suzanne Fitzpatrick, she then shut out Kate Addessi 6-0, 6-0.
After a close first set at fourth singles, Stephanie Allan did not allow a game for the rest of the match in a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lauralton’s Kate Laterzia. Allan did not allow any in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lauren Zurich as Barlow swept Immaculate in singles.
Lauralton Hall gave the Falcons a battle in doubles, forcing two of the three contests to go to three sets before the latter won. In the number one spot Kristin Hanczor and Sarah Fleischer lost the first set but held on to take close second and then cruised to victory in the third at 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Katherine O’Hara and Meghan Fornshell. It was the first time in two years that Lauralton’s first doubles team had lost.
“It was a great win for the girls,” said Barlow coach Randy Light. “They started out slow but they’ve done that in a few matches.”
Hanczor and Fleischer had easier time in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Immaculate’s Christina Foley and Kara Ballotti.
Taryn Colonnese and Delaney Bracken also lost their first set before bouncing back to beat Meredith Elia and Elizabeth O’Connell 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in a close second doubles match. The Barlow pair then rolled to 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Greta Lang and Becky Loya.
The Falcons used a couple of different combinations at third doubles, each getting wins. Tori Bailey and Michelle Molokotos were 6-2, 6-2 winners over Lauralton’s Sarah Lasher and Alex Franchella and Katie Lisi and Natalie Astorino combined to defeat Tara Wright and Kiki Bellotti 6-0, 6-2.
The Falcons, now 10-0 overall, are one of only two unbeaten teams left in the South-West Conference. They host Notre Dame today (Thursday), visit unbeaten defending champ Weston on Friday, and finish the regular season on Monday at home against Bethel.
