The little miscues would add up against the Weston High boys varsity lacrosse team in its game at Newtown.

A couple of mental mistakes, some errant passes and ground balls that got away all tilted the scales away from the Trojans. While they did threaten the Nighthawks early on they could not hold on, losing 12-8 last Thursday, May 1, at Blue and Gold Stadium.

“We made a couple of mistakes,” said Weston head coach Brendan Carney. “It definitely wasn’t everyone’s best game.”

Despite the mistakes the Trojans stayed right with Newtown for much of the way, trailing just 4-3 after one quarter. But whereas the Nighthawks kept up their offensive level of play for the rest of the half, the Trojans grew stagnant, netting only one more goal during that time to trail 8-4.

When play resumed Weston came out stronger for the second half, cutting the lead to 11-7 at one point. That was as close as it came before the final frame proved to be another offensive challenge for the visitors.

“We played it pretty close,” said Carney. “Once they got the lead they were good enough to not let us back in.”

Jeff Ledwick led the scoring for Weston with four goals, second overall only to Newtown’s Christian Beitel, who had five. The former also had two assists.

Morgan Faller scored twice, with Peter Smith and Brian Rogers netting one apiece. Josh Briskman had 11 saves in goal for Weston.

Weston quickly rebounded when it hosted FCIAC rival Staples the following day. Some occasional drizzle did not dampen the Trojans’ spirits in a 14-6 win under the lights.

Ledwick led Weston with five goals. He also had a pair of assists.

Weston visits Pomperaug today (Thursday) and hosts Immaculate on Tuesday.
