What's Up in Redding - a calendar of local events

Thursday, June 5
Program on creating herb containers, 7 to 8:30 at New Pond Farm. All materials will be provided, bring gardening gloves if desired. The cost is $25 per member, $30 for non-members. Call 938-2117 to register.

Documentary on filmmaking, 7:30 p.m. at Mark Twain Library. Kelsey Eichhorn is the winner of two awards at this year’s Vermont Film Festival. She will demonstrate how to create and edit a documentary film using her most recent original shorts, and talk about the process of making a documentary. There is no admission charge, but reservations are suggested by calling the library at 938-2545.

Saturday, June 7
Astronomy program, 8:25 to 10 p.m. at the New Pond Farm Observatory on Marchant Road. There will be an opportunity to see clusters of galaxies outside of the home galaxy as well as constellations.  All ages are welcome. Bring lawn chairs and binoculars if available. Call the farm at 938-2117 for reservations. In the event of poor weather, the event will be rescheduled. The program cost for members is $4 per person with a $16 maximum per family, and $6 per person, $24 maximum per family for non-members.

Sunday, June 8
Georgetown Day, noon to 7 on Main Street, Georgetown. Street will be closed to cars to create a venue for more than 70 craft booths, food vendors, a Lions Club beer tent, a dunk tank, and a Chili Cook-off. A screening of “A Georgetown Story” will be at the nearby Georgetown Bible Church and live bands on stage at both ends of the street. There will be activities for children and raffles.

Tuesday, June 10
Concert featuring Irish singer, 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Pryor-Hubbard Hall. Fiona Molloy, a singer born in Ireland, will perform. Ms. Molloy has produced five CDs that will be available on June 10. Donation for the tickets is $10 apiece with the proceeds donated to the church. Call 544-8481 for tickets and information. Seating is limited.

Wednesday, June 11
“The Lure of Stone and the Walls Made from Them,” a program offered by historian Dan Cruson at New Pond Farm from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Program consists of two parts, an evening lecture presentation followed by a walking tour of the stone features of New Pond Farm. Program will introduce the reasons why and how stone walls were built, dispelling common myths. Cost for each session is $10 for members, $12 for non-members. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 938-2117.

Thursday, June 12
Spring Tea Party, hosted by the Commission on Aging, at 3 p.m. at the Community Center, Lonetown Road. Guests at the tea will be treated to tea sandwiches and sweets. To make a reservation for the tea, call Janet Cianci, 938-9387, or Janet Metzger, 938-2951. If transportation is required, it may be requested at this time.

Friday, June 13
Shays office hours, 10 to 1 at town hall. Congressman Christopher Shays’ (R-4th) staff will be available to speak with constituents on a first-come, first-served basis about questions or concerns related to federal government programs and agencies.

Saturday, June 14
Potluck supper, barn dancing, 5:30 to 9 at New Pond Farm. Bill Fischer and The Wild Notes will teach and call traditional dances like contras and squares for all ages. Dinner begins at 5:30 with dancing from 6:30 to 9. The cost is $10 per person for members with a maximum cost of $40 per family; $12 per person for non-members with a maximum cost of $50 per family.
