Redding celebrates June 2 Trails Day
National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2, is a perfect time of year to take a hike: The leaves are tender green, the wildflowers in abundant bloom and the weather still balmy.

As part of the nation-wide celebration of Trails Day, a hike is planned on The Rock Lot and Evelyn Scott Nature Preserve under the auspices of the Connecticut Forest and Park Association which, for the last 15 years, has coordinated Connecticut Trails Day events. During that time, the state has become the nation’s leader in National Trails Day events.

Led by Redding’s assistant trail boss, Jere Ross, and sponsored by the Norwalk River Watershed Association, the four-mile hike is scheduled on Saturday, June 2, from 1 to 4.  Moderately strenuous, the trail features rock ledges and whale-backs, hardwood and hemlock stands, wetlands and vistas. Walkers should bring beverages and meet at the south end of the Branchville railroad parking lot, Route 7, Ridgefield. The rain date is Sunday, June 3. For further information, call Jere Ross at 938-2650.

Another special hike in Redding is planned in recognition of Trails Day and Redding’s pioneering efforts through the town and the Redding Land Trust to preserve Redding’s natural heritage. This is a walk through Bogus Brook Preserve led by Trail Tender Dan Heller. Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, Mr. Heller will lead hikers through a bird-watcher’s treasured site, with many local species flocking to the low-lying swamps in the area.

For trail parking, cross the railroad tracks at the West Redding Station onto Long Ridge Road and continue to the four-way stop on Long Ridge, go right on Old Lantern Road and proceed for about a mile and then turn right onto Chuck Wagon. Parking is in the cul-de-sac at the end of Chuck Wagon Road. Waterproof shoes, insect repellent and binoculars are suggested. For further information, contact leader Dan Heller at 938-3995.
