Watershed group hosting annual river cleanup
|
The Norwalk River Watershed Association will be kicking off its annual spring cleaning of the Norwalk River with a four-town event on Saturday, March 29.
Volunteers are needed to help clean up debris and litter along the river in north Wilton, Ridgefield and Redding, with sessions at various locations from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
A shoreline cleanup in Norwalk will take place at the mouth of the river at Oyster Shell Park from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is co-sponsored by the Norwalk League of Women Voters.
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, school environment clubs, youth groups, service clubs, businesses, families, and individuals are all being asked to give a few hours to improve a section by the river or by a roadside where trash might wash into the river or a wetland.
Volunteers who give three hours of river cleanup time and answer the Norwalk River Quiz that can be downloaded at norwalkriverwatershed.org, can earn the Norwalk River Watershed Patch. The Web site will also list the hold harmless form that volunteers can download, complete, sign, and bring to the cleanup.
Section captains will provide information on what to bring and where to meet. Work clothes, gloves, and high rubber boots or waterproof work shoes are suggested. The section captain will have large plastic garbage bags, but participants are being asked to bring a supply of plastic grocery bags with handles to make moving through vegetation easier. Donations of big garbage bags are appreciated.
To volunteer, call North Wilton, Redding, and Ridgefield section captain Lillian Willis at 438-8653.
If a business, scout group, or individual would like to participate but needs to do the cleanup on a different day or at a different time, contact NRWA toll free at (877) NRWA-INFO, or at norwalkriver@info.org.
