For Georgetown Day: Who has the best chili?

Who makes the best chili around? On Sunday, June 8, starting at noon, area chili enthusiasts will have their say during the seventh annual Chili Cook-Off, heating up on Georgetown Day.

This year’s “hot” event is being organized by the Joel Barlow High School wrestling team. With names like Triple Threat Chili, El Diablo, Doc’s Wake the Dead Chili, and Meanie Beanies, local chili chefs from restaurants and amateur kitchens alike are betting their concoctions can beat the best that even Texas has to offer. But the wrestlers — taking over the event from the Mark Twain Library — are eager to expand the field. Anyone who would like to participate in the chili cook-off contest is urged to contact chili chair Sandee Zurzuski (938-9342; zsandeez.pchef@sbcglobal.net) for details. No experience is necessary — just a big pot, a secret recipe ... and a catchy name!

To compete in the Chili Cook-Off, cooks must supply 12 quarts of their homemade chili — any and all types are welcome — and a sign with the name of their concoction. The wrestlers will provide the tables, tents, ladles, and Sterno-heated pans. At stake — the honor of being voted the best chili around.

People’s Choice Awards are tallied from the hundreds of voters who attend the cook-off and bravely sample as many as 20 different recipes. There will also be a Cook’s Choice Award, given to the most popular chili among the participating chefs.
“Each year the competition has been getting steeper,” said Sandee Zurzuski, chili chair. “The Barlow wrestlers are really hoping for an impressive battle.”
