50 YEARS AGO: Town gears up for 250th anniversary celebration

Postmaster John L. Sullivan secured approval from the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C., for the use of a special mail cancellation die calling attention to Ridgefield's 250th anniversary celebration, the April 17, 1958 Press reported. The special cancellation stamp was used until Nov. 1, 1958. Ridgefield began its official 250th celebration on April 27, the 181st anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield.
Silvio Bedini announced that recently discovered and previously unpublished historical materials would be included in the 250th anniversary book,
Ridgefield in Review, which he was preparing for publication. Working with Mr. Bedini on the book were Miss Phyllis Paccadolmi, Mrs. Arthur Sullivan, Mrs. Howard Nash, Miss Elizabeth McCoy, Mrs. Aldo Girolmetti, Mrs. Richard Lynch and Mrs. Alda Rogers.
Mrs. John J. Hanford, the former Miss Nancy Keeler and a direct descendant of the Keelers who settled Ridgefield, wore an authentic Colonial-era dress at the “Cavalcade of Fashion” staged by the Ridgefield Cancer Committee to raise funds and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the town.

Seven historic houses made up the border of the Ridgefield commemorative dinner plate that was being distributed by the 250th Anniversary Committee. The blue on white 11-inch plate was sold for $1.50 and proceeds were used to help finance the celebration. The houses included the Hawley house, the Keeler Tavern, the King house, the Peter Parley (Samuel Goodrich) house, the Smith Tavern, the Stebbins house and Tuppence.
George Leeman and Donald Chandler were the winners in Miss Hearst's sixth grade spelling bee.

Mr. and Mrs. Nazzareno J. Ancona announced the birth of their daughter, Cheryl. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cartin announced the birth of a son, their first child, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cartin announced the birth of their daughter. The Bodurthas of Hayes Lane announced the birth of their third child, a son.
According to the New York Journal American, Astrid Aaning, the 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bjarne Aaning of Eight Lakes, was the highest paid child model at $75 an hour.
Little League Commissioner Joe Brunetti announced the roster of players. Rudy Marconi, Richard Ligi, Fred Cypher, Joe Sheehy, Ted Nash, Brian Sullivan were among the teammates on the Braves. They were coached by Nano Marconi and Gino Tarsi. Joey Egan, Richard Polverari, J.B. Baldaserini, Dave Montanari, Jim Pambianchi and Roger Dorra were among the members of the Knights of Columbus Diamonds, who were coached by F. Paul Biagotti, Primo Baldaserini and Leo Pambianchi.
