Sandra “Sandy” Pheris DeWald of Weems and Williamsburg, Va., a former Ridgefielder who was active in Episcopal Church work, died on April 24 in Williamsburg after a long illness. She was 69 years old and the wife of Richard D. DeWald.

Mrs. DeWald was born on August 3, 1938, in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of the late Col. William E. and Dorothy de Berard Pheris III.
As a military child, she moved frequently. She graduated from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Va., and attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va.
Mrs. DeWald raised her family in several states and had lived in Ridgefield for 29 years on Pocconock Trail. She was active in the Episcopal Church, including St. Stephen’s here, and led Community Bible Study fellowships.
She was also an avid golfer and quilter.
“She is loved and will be missed by all of her extended family and friends,” her family said.
Besides her husband of 50 years, Mrs. DeWald is survived by three daughters, Carey D. Jeffrey and her husband, Russell, of East Greenwich, R.I., Cris D. Walsh and her husband, Brendan, of Ridgefield, and Cyndy D. Moyer and husband, Mark, of Westport, and one son, Richard D. DeWald Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Newtown, and 13 grandchildren, Russell, Stephen, Conor, Michael, Claire, Aislinn, Olivia, Gwen, Corbin, Grace, Trey, Cole, and Aidan.
A private memorial service is planned at Christ and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Westport.
