Girls lacrosse: Trumbull gets past RHS, 13-9
|
Despite an impressive five-point effort from senior Melissa Lloyd-Williams, the Ridgefield High girls lacrosse team fell to visiting Trumbull, 13-9, last Saturday afternoon at Tiger Hollow.
It was the sixth straight loss for Ridgefield, which dropped to 2-7 overall.
Trumbull goalie Pearl Wong tamed the Tigers by recording 15 saves, including 10 as Ridgefield kept the pressure on in the second half, coming as close as two when Lloyd-Williams scored with 14:41 left in regulation.
“She made a lot of saves,” said Ridgefield head coach Molly Lenseth about Wong. “She’s a good goalie. But I think we handed her a lot of her saves; we didn’t work hard for our shots. It works both ways.”
After Williams’s fourth goal of the game made it 8-6, the resilient Trumbull offense answered quickly as goals from Sara Barakrishnan and Molly Morris gave Trumbull a 10-6 lead with 11:53 left.
After Lenseth called a time-out, the Tigers cut the lead to three on a goal from senior Shannon Belfanti with 10:59 left. But Trumbull answered about a minute later on a goal by Emily Keller (one goal, two assists) assisted by Bethany Barbar (two goals, one assist).
The teams then traded goals twice more, with Trumbull’s Hannah Wolkowitz getting the last of her five goals to end the scoring with 15 seconds left to play.
Wolkowitz put the Golden Eagles on the board first, beating Tiger goalie Jenna Ruddock a minute into the first half. Lloyd-Williams evened the score just 12 seconds later, as she picked up the draw and charged down the field, beating Wong. She added another goal a minute later, giving the Tigers their only lead of the game at 2-1.
The Golden Eagles replied with five straight goals over the next 10 minutes from Wolkowitz, Barbar and Bruzinski.
The Tigers netted the next two goals, trimming the lead to 6-4. Lloyd-Williams was awarded a free position and fired the ball past Wong, and then senior Jenny Conte scored on an assist from junior Amanda Hoecker.
Weaving through the Tigers’ defense, Bianca Dudas pushed Trumbull’s lead to three with just over two minutes left to play in the first half. Lloyd-Williams then fed Conte, who bounced a shot past Wong but off the post.
The Golden Eagles applied pressure as time wound down in the first half, but Ruddock kept the Tigers within three by making nine of her 14 saves before intermission.
Lloyd-Williams finished with four goals and an assist to lead Ridgefield. Megan Hume added two goals and Maria Gardell, Conte and Belfanti had one goal apiece. Freshman Maggie Curran and sophomore Tori South each had one assist.
“I think they played really hard out there,” said Trumbull head coach Lou Monaco about his team after the game. “We had a midfielder get hurt, so a lot of our players had to step up and play a lot more than they are used to.”
Monaco said he was impressed by the Tigers’ defense and how Ridgefield kept answering back.
“I give them a lot of credit. They played pretty good D,” he said. “It was a good lacrosse game by both teams.”
Notes: Ridgefield was coming off a 10-9 loss to Joel Barlow-Redding in a non-conference game last Wednesday.
Lloyd-Williams had four goals to lead the Tigers. Alexa Darling added two goals and two assists, and Allison Baker, Belfanti and Conte scored one goal apiece. Brita Christensen and Baker each had one assist.
