Softball: Coach hopes good can come from loss

Trailing 3-0, Staples rallied for four unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Ridgefield, 4-3, in an FCIAC softball game Monday afternoon in Ridgefield.

“What can come out of a loss is character,” said Ridgefield head coach Angelo Formisano. “We have to learn from this and make it a positive as we go forward. We were complacent in a loss to Greenwich last Wednesday and then we won two games in two days. We have to do the same thing with this loss.”

Two errors, including a flyball that was misplayed into a three-run triple, doomed the Tigers in the loss to Staples. Ridgefield loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning but failed to score as Staples pitcher Dana Levy got a pop-up and groundout to end the game.

Ridgefield took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as Tara Formisano singled and later scored on Jill Richter’s suicide squeeze.

The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth. Melanie Andrea singled and Mary Shaw reached on an error. An error on Kim Amrod’s grounder scored one run, and Formisano followed with an RBI single.

The score stayed that way until Staples’ rally in the seventh.

Ridgefield was coming off a dramatic 2-1 victory over Wilton last Friday.

Trailing 1-0, the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as Annie Wendel reached on an error and Formisano crushed a pitch for a long two-run homer that traveled over 300 feet in the air. It was Formisano’s second homer in as many games and her fourth of the season.

Ashley Higgins then retired Wilton in the top of the seventh to end the game. Higgins finished with a four-hitter, walking one and striking out five.

On Thursday, the Tigers defeated Fairfield Ludlowe, 4-1.

Ahead 2-1, Ridgefield extended its lead in the sixth as Andrea singled and Formisano unloaded another booming homer down the left field line.

Ridgefield scored its first two runs in the fourth. Andrea tripled and scored on Formisano’s wind-aided double, and Maddie Sposito followed with an RBI single.

Higgins pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking none. Ludlowe’s only run was unearned.

The day before, the Tigers had their seven-game winning streak snapped in a 4-1 loss to Greenwich.

Miscues hurt as Ridgefield committed three errors, leading to three unearned runs.

The Tigers got their only run in the sixth on Amrod’s sacrifice fly.

Higgins allowed four hits while walking one and striking out six.
