The Ridgefield High boys track team continued its winning ways Tuesday, building on last week’s three victories with a sweep of three more dual meets.
The Tigers handily beat Bridgeport Central, 102-48. But in the other two meets, it came down to the last event for the margin of victory. The Tigers were able to come away with identical 80-70 wins against both Darien and Fairfield Warde.
The day was carried by the final event, the javelin, with Ridgefield junior Shaun Roche taking first place (133’7”) and sophomore Robert Gunshor taking third place (114’0”).
The Tigers had a strong day in the other field events as well. In the shot put, Adam Trainer placed second (37’8”) and Roche third (36’11”). Ash Branson took third in the high jump (5’4”). In the pole vault the Tigers finished fourth (sophomore Shane Brady at 9’6) and fifth (freshman Ian Goldberg at 9’0). In the triple jump Noah Kelly took fourth (34’4.5”) and Ben Fernadez fifth (31’6.5”). In the long jump Ryan Curnal was fifth (16’4”).
The Tigers also had a strong day in the distance races. Matt Oakes was third (4:42.9) and Michael Ignatowich fourth (4:44.3) in the 1,600. In the 3,200, Christian Kearns took fourth (10:22.5) and Richie Hume fifth (10:24.2).
The Tigers had an outstanding day in the relays, their best of the season. In the 4x100, the team of Andrew Boytos, Troy Shepard, Mark Kelley and Connor McCarthy placed first with a time of 45.13. And in the most exciting race of the day, the 4x400, Branson, Kelley, Chris Wilson and Austin Von Ohlsen just edged out Darien for first with a time of 3:34.6.
The team’s sprinters had a strong day as well. Von Ohlsen placed second in the 100 (10.74) and first in both the 200 (21.9) and the 400 (51.6). Kelley took third in the 200 (23.4), McCarthy placed fourth in the 100 (10.98) and Colin Thomson was fourth in the 400 (56.85).
