'New' panel gives nod to Shine sign

In its first test as a new advisory board, the Village District Consultants — also known as the Architectural Advisory Committee — approved changes to an awning on a Main Street salon.
The AAC acted in its capacity as the Village District Consultants for the first time since the Planning and Zoning Commission appointed it as the interim aesthetic advisors for the new downtown village district.
The zoning board, using new state statutes, designated the Main Street area a village district May 1 with its adoption of a revision of the town’s zoning code.
Shine SalonSpa, at 390-92 Main Street, wanted to put in a new awning and have new lettering on the awning. Under the village district statute, any changes to the exterior of a building in the district the publicly can readily see must go before a village district review board.
The AAC, acting in a completely separate role as the Village District Consultants, recommended approval the awning, with a couple of minor alterations. The salon originally wanted its corporate logo at either end of the awning. Instead, the new awning sign will have the salon name with “An Aveda salon” beneath the name in the center of the awning.
“It expands what we get to look at,” said John Kinnear of the AAC and the Village District Consultants. “We look at things in the same way and we come to consensus in the same way, but it’s good we get to some of the things that don’t involve major renovations in the village and signage is extremely important. A bad sign is as bad as a bad building.”
