ENVIRONMENT: Cub Scouts sell composting bins today

Backyard composing bins will be sold by Cub  Scout Pack 26 at Ridgefield’s Recycling Center today, Saturday, March 22, and next Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 to 1:30.

“Americans throw away 28 tons of leaves and yard trimmings every year,” said Molly McGeehin, Press environmental columnist. “In addition, much of what passes through your kitchen is compostable, including vegetable scraps, fruit peelings, bread and cereals, grains and pasta, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, crushed eggshells, and even tissues.”

Ms. McGeehin said “composting is also an invaluable educational tool because it creates the opportunity for even young members of the family to get involved in helping Mother Earth as they learn about conservation, nature and the cycle of life.”

The Cub Scouts will be selling the bins for $50 and a kitchen pail to hold the scraps for $10.

The bins are scheduled to be delivered in the third week of April — right around Earth Day.

If you can’t get to the Recycling Center on those dates, contact John Papa at jpapa@golfandhome.com to place an order.
