GARDENING:
Big plant sale opens Friday in park
|
It is time to get in the garden and dig, but first, a stop at the Ballard Greenhouse Plant Sale on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Caudatowa and Ridgefield Garden Clubs, this year’s plants appear to be the best stock yet.
For vegetable growers, some heirloom tomatoes like Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter and Rutgers have been grown in the greenhouse, in addition to some tomatoes suitable for pots, like Yellow Pear.
Two varieties of Cosmos and three of marigolds are available as well as new perennials like Salvia Caradonna and Dicentra Luxuriant, not to mention the tried and true Astilbe and Geranium Rozanne.
In addition to ready-made baskets brimming with flowers, the Children’s Station in the Garden Boutique is back, where kids can fill their own baskets with colorful blooms. Locally proven plants from established gardens in Diggings and Donations are a sure-fire addition to any garden. New this year is something very old — the 300-year old Celsiana Rose, a special offering in celebration of Ridgefield’s 300th Anniversary.
For further information on the plant sale, call the Ballard Greenhouse at 438-5816; for information on the Celsiana Rose, e-mail susan.mcgowan@gmail.com.
