ECONOMY:
Ridgefield's tax collections are doing OK
May 8, 2008
The weak economy has not hit the town tax income yet — at least “not significantly,” Tax Collector Jane Berendsen-Hill said Monday.
Ms. Berendsen-Hill said she was pleased that the town’s tax collections for April met her forecast. She bad been concerned that the collection rate might be lower than she had expected due to the economy, she said.
“March was lower than forecast, so I was worried that this was the beginning of a trend — it was not — April came in strong,” she said. “There isn’t a trend — at least not yet.”
The second quarter payment covers the taxes due for April, May and June. By state statute, taxpayers have until the first business day in May to pay that bill without penalty, she said.
