When the competition gets more intense there is no doubt that the Weston High boys golf team would like a round similar to the one they had against Notre Dame of Fairfield last week.

The Trojans had three golfers shoot under 40. Most of the competition was within their own ranks as they were far ahead of their opponent in a 156-226 win on Wednesday, April 23, at the Connecticut Golf Club in Easton.

“The younger guys have really stepped it up,” said Weston coach Al Gurney, noting the improvement among the first-year starting players. “They’re making us a really good team.”

A case in point was freshman Joe D’Amato. Shooting a one-over-par 37, he was medalist for the match.

Two of his teammates were not far behind. One stroke later was Taylor Navin with a 38, who was also a stroke ahead of Bernie D’Amato. Also scoring for Weston was Brian Epstein with a 42.

Visiting Stratford the next day, the Trojans had a good day at Mill River Country Club. Posting their best round to date, they won 153-193.

The D’Amato brothers led the team. Shooting a three-under-par 33, Bernie was named the medalist.

Joe also broke 40, this time with a 38. Navin finished with 40 on the nose.

Also in the lineup, Jack Foster completed the scoring with a 42.

Weston, now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the South-West Conference, hosts Joel Barlow on Monday at the Connecticut Golf Club and visits Newtown at Newtown Country Club on Tuesday.
