A late-inning rally nearly did it for the Weston High varsity baseball team against Bethel.

The Trojans were down four runs going into their last at bat but then began to come to life. After cutting the deficit in half they were a good hit from tying it up before host Bethel got out of the jam with a 4-2 win instead last Friday, May 2, at Freebairn Field.

“I’m happy with their performance,” said Weston head coach Dave Lustberg, noting his team’s pitching and defense. “We played one of our best games of the season.”

It took the Trojans a while to get to Bethel pitcher Emily Albin, who allowed only three hits. In the meantime her teammates gave her the offensive support she needed by scoring a run in the bottom of the first, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to go up 4-0.

In the top of the seventh Weston came up with some hits. Two were by Biz Harrigan and Kelly Ogiba, who both drove in runs. With two outs Weston had runners on second and third before being stopped.

“It was a great game,” said Lustberg. “They showed a lot of fight against an excellent team and a really great pitcher.”

Harrigan also pitched for Weston, striking out six. Kathy Fredrickson had Weston’s other hit.

Defensively, catcher Danielle Tolkin threw out three runners attempting to steal.

Traveling to New Milford the next day for a makeup game, the Trojans had trouble getting hits against Vanessa Maloney. Managing only two, they failed to score in a 5-0 loss.

That did not stop the Trojans from getting runners aboard. Despite throwing hard, Maloney also issued eight walks.

“We had a lot of base runners,” said Lustberg. “We just couldn’t put them across.”

Julianne Funk had two hits for Weston. Tolkin also threw out two runners from behind the plate.

Weston, now 1-13, hosts Kolbe Cathedral on Friday, goes to Immaculate on Tuesday and is home against Notre Dame on Wednesday.
