Only a week after losing two-heartbreaking games the Weston High varsity baseball team would yet again feel the pain of a close, tough loss, this one at Newtown on Monday, April 14.

The Trojans scored early with a first-inning run on a wild pitch, and then an error allowed another run to come home for a quick 2-0 lead. While Newtown would get a run back in the bottom of the first, it had trouble getting anything going offensively because Weston pitcher Mike Berliner was rolling along.

After the first-inning run Berliner retired five straight and did not allow a run for the next three innings. He was helped out offensively in the bottom of the second when Mike Odierna hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1 and Jamie Monn hit one of his own an inning later.

Newtown began to chip away at Weston’s lead starting in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs it scored a run on a combination infield hit and bad throw, which put the runner on second. The next batter singled to bring the runner home.

In the fifth Newtown would again plate a run as Nick Urso singled home P.J. Cochrane to make the score 4-3. While the Nighthawks would not score in the rest of that inning, they erupted in the bottom of the sixth for two runs when the game was on the line to doom the Trojans, who would go down quickly in the top of the seventh to send them to a third straight loss.

Any chance of their opponent closing a narrow gap was taken care of early when the Trojans pounded out 13 hits for an 11-1 win over Stratford at home two days layer.

Mike McDonald had a good day at the bat and on the mound as well. Besides getting two hits, including a two-run triple, he pitched five solid innings to lead the Trojans. He is now 2-0 on the season.

Sam Armstrong had three hits and two RBIs, Jesse Nusbaum had two hits and Mike Waterhouse had two hits in the win. McDonald gave up one earned run and seven hits, and struck out three.

Weston appeared to be right on course when it visited Masuk last Friday, holding a six-run lead at one point. Things began falling apart after that as the Panthers had two big innings, allowing them to tie the score and then take the lead for a 10-7 win.

Led by the bat of Jamie Monn, who had three hits and three RBI, the Trojans took a 7-1 lead after two and a half innings. In the bottom of the frame Weston gave up six runs, all but one unearned. While Weston failed to score the rest of the way, Masuk went on to take the lead with three more runs for the come-from-behind win.

Weston pitchers Mike Odierna, Jesse Link and Mike Berliner gave up only two earned runs.

Now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the SWC, Weston hosts Brookfield today (Thursday), visits New Milford on Monday and hosts Pomperaug on Wednesday.
