Newtown, Pomperaug fall
May 8, 2008
by Jaclyn Roth
It seems the main challenge for the Weston High girls tennis team this season has been finding a challenging opponent.
The undefeated Trojans have not only made short work of every team they have faced, they have done it decisively, even against some of the better teams in the South-West Conference.
The latest to fall victim were Pomperaug and Newtown, two SWC finalists in recent seasons. The Trojans were still dominant, beating the former 7-0 last Wednesday, April 30, and the latter 6-1 the next day.
First singles player Alyssa Schaefer defeated Pomperaug’s Elizabeth Dunbar 6-3, 6-1. Katie Gross had an easy match as well, beating Lindsay Teardo 6-0, 6-3 in the number two spot. Kate Cohen played third singles and defeated Lauren Damiani 6-2, 6-2.
Although the Trojans won each, the remaining matches all went to either a tiebreaker or a third set. Dixie Glaser played a great match against Chelsea Porter. Glaser started out losing the first set but won the match 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles.
The first doubles team of Lindsey Gersh and Liz Palmieri played against Melanie Scott and Courtney Hams. The girls won 7-5, 7-6, with a tiebreaker of 7-3.
Second doubles, players Zoe Valella and Kelly Pierce split sets as well, winning against Cassandra Foy and Tess Vogel 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Rebecca Zhu and Laura Jaffee came through in their third doubles match as well, winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Weston changed its lineup a bit the next day against Newtown. Marie Gargiulo was at first singles and had an easy match against Christina Ciamarra, winning 6-0, 6-1. Schaefer moved to second singles and beat Katie Serock 6-2, 7-5 after a tough second set.
Newtown’s only win came at third singles and went to three sets as Jenna Himmelfarb outlasted Gross 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Cohen moved to fourth singles and was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Caitlin O’Mahomey.
Gersh and Palmieri were at first doubles again and nearly swept their opponents before winning 6-0, 6-1 against Maxx Zimmer and Charlotte Manos. Valella teamed up with Emma Samson and won 6-3, 6-1 against Erin Nemeth and Ashley Cech. The girls had great teamwork and worked very hard. Pierce and Zhu formed the third doubles team than won 6-4, 6-4 against Kristen Tanner and Meghan Loose.
Now 9-0. Weston visits Bunnell today (Thursday), has a big match on Friday at home against undefeated Joel Barlow, goes to Stratford on Monday, and finishes the regular season on Tuesday at home against Notre Dame.
