Weston P&Z accepts archive application
by Patricia Gay

The Planning and Zoning Commission is starting the review of an application by the Weston Historical Society to construct an archive and exhibit hall at 107 Weston Road. To that end, the commission has called for a public hearing on April 7.

The plan calls for a two-level structure. On the lower level would be a temperature- and humidity-controlled vault and adjacent archive workroom. The vault would store maps, letters, the Fitch Diaries, costumes, hats, and quilts.

On the main ground floor level would be an exhibit hall for archival display, plus a society office, reading room, and bathrooms.

“The goal of the historical society is to provide a secure facility that will encourage people with articles of interest to preserve and keep Weston history in Weston,” said Jim Jamieson, the project’s architect.

The plan calls for new construction as well as incorporating an existing 750-square-foot cider shed into the facility. “The health department said the shed can’t be used to make cider, so we are planning on making it part of the new facility,” Mr. Jamieson said.

He said the facility is designed to look like a barn, keeping in character with the Coley Homestead, where it will be located.

The proposed cost of the project is $1.2 million.
