Women's League fund-raiser gets 'groovy'

Westonites in mod mini-skirts, fishnet stockings, wigs, and John Lennon specs invaded Darien for The Weston Women’s League (WWL) Spring Fund-raiser, “The British Invasion.” Go-go boots in neon brights, silver, gold lame and classic white were spotted in abundance.

“Oh, behave!” 60’s cut-out Austin Powers seemed to greet guests as they arrived at the Meadowlands, a Victorian mansion built in the late 1800’s and listed on the National Register of Historic places.

They did their best. The evening, with its nod to 60’s Britannia, got underway with The Jerry Vigorito Band’s selection of Beatles classics. Sixties cover songs featured Chris Coogan of Weston, Chris Pike of Ridgefield, John Cain and Rob Fried of Redding, and Jerry Vigorito of Westport.

Amidst cosmopolitans and martinis, guests bid on silent and live auction items, which brought in an excess of $35,000. for five local non-profits: Mercy Learning Center, Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Project Return and Dress for Success.

“The Weston Women’s League is an extremely dedicated group of women who have been hard at work for almost a year to make the British Invasion such a success,” said Mercedes Velgot, WWL President. “We thank the Weston and Westport communities as well as our local businesses and merchants for their extremely generous support.”

The Weston Women’s League (WWL) was founded in 1972 to promote a sense of community through dedication to civic services, fundr-aising and cultural activities.

The WWL has grown to be a cornerstone of philanthropic and educational endeavors and has distributed over $550,000 to many Fairfield County charities. For more information about the Weston Women’s League, please visit westonwomensleague.org.
