Wilton Bulletin Editorial: The die is cast
Mar 27, 2008
With Peggy Reeves’ announcement on Monday that she was challenging State Rep. Toni Boucher for her 143rd District seat, Wiltonians, and fellow constituents from Norwalk, will have the privilege of making a difficult choice in the coming election.
It’s not often in Wilton when there can be said to be a true contest for an elected office, as many past contenders for this office and others in town have lacked the experience and expertise to make a strong run.
In the case of the 143rd District, however, voters will be faced with the choice between two strong, competent women who have spent decades in town and have earned a great deal of respect from all and friendship from many.
That some of these friendships may be tested in November makes the decision that much harder.
Ms. Boucher has been a strong advocate for Wilton —starting with her work here on town boards — and continuing in Hartford. Ms. Reeves has also been a standardbearer for the town, becoming intimately involved in a wide range of town affairs, organizations and politics.
Wiltonians may look forward to a passionate race from each, one that covers a range of issues important to residents, and offers rational and realistic solutions.
In past races, contenders for Ms. Boucher’s seat have run, in essence, as having the same goals as their rival, but with the letter D behind their name, suggesting more can be accomplished in Hartford with a Democrat representing the town.
We expect Ms. Reeves to bring much more than that argument to the table.
