Boys lacrosse: Rams nip Warriors in defensive war

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead over visiting New Canaan just 40 seconds into the second quarter, the Wilton High boys lacrosse team could only find the back of the next once more the rest of the game.
The result was a disappointing 4-3 loss in what was an epic defensive battle.
The loss dropped the Warriors to 6-3 on the season.
Vinnie Cannon’s goal with 3:42 to go in the first quarter put Wilton up 1-0, and Mike Francia made it 2-0 with 11:18 left in the second quarter.
The Rams answered with three straight goals to close out the half, taking their first lead with 26 seconds left in the half when the ball rolled out of a pack of players in the crease right to Charlie Stanton, alone in front.
Harrison Hess scored with five minutes left in the third quarter to make it 3-3 and both sides had chances to score in the fourth quarter before Stanton ended a New Canaan break with a goal with 9:14 left for the game-winner.
Wilton finished with a 29-20 edge in shots.
“We had a lot of chances, a lot of good shots at the very end,” said coach Paul McNulty, who praised his defense and goalie James Fuller (13 saves) in a gutty effort.
“We told the kids after the game, the only thing the coaches were disappointed in, was the score, not the effort.”
Wilton pressured to the end, with Hess’s shot turned away with three seconds left to play.
Peter McMahon, Cannon and Mike Shagi had assists for Wilton.
