Golf: New Canaan edges WHS by one shot

Going into Tuesday’s match with undefeated New Canaan, Doug Campbell thought his team would win if it shot a 160 or 161.

It did — but it didn’t.

New Canaan shot a 159 to edge Wilton by one stroke in a showdown between two of the FCIAC’s top boys golf teams at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton. The Rams are now 12-0 and Wilton 11-2.

“I had in my mind that either a 160 or a 161 would be good enough for the victory,” said Campbell, the Wilton High head coach. “But give New Canaan credit. They came to our course and played real well. They’re a real tough team.”

There was some measure of success for the Warriors as top player Brian Murphy got an eagle on the final hole, the par-five ninth, to shoot an even-par 36 and earn medalist honors over New Canaan’s highly regarded Curtis Loop, who finished with a 37. Two years ago, as a freshman, Loop shot a 33 at Rolling Hills.

“Murph had a good round,” said Campbell. “He double bogeyed the third hole but then bounced back with a birdie on four. And I haven’t seen many people get an eagle on the ninth hole. That was a great finish.”

Will Herndon and Jack Mathews each shot 41 for the Warriors, while Marshall Stock finished with a 42 to complete the scoring. Herndon was playing well until taking an eight on the eighth hole.

New Canaan’s Ross Kronberg had the day’s third best score with a 39. Crispin Love shot 41 and Andrew Krieger 42.

“It was an exciting match between two good teams,” said Campbell. “It was a fun match to be a part of.”

Notes: Resting several starters, the Warriors got their 11th win with a 183-205 victory over McMahon at Oak Hills in Norwalk on Monday. Mathews and Nick Botticelli tied for medalist honors by each shooting 45. Mike Deming shot a 46 and John Resch a 47 to complete the Wilton scoring.

Wilton suffered its first loss of the season last Thursday in Westport, falling to Staples, 142-154, at Longshore.

Murphy was the medalist with a 34. Botticelli, Stock and Mathews all shot 40.

Scott Adamson, Dylan Murray and Andron Gay all shot 35 for Staples (8-1).
