Golf: Wilton trounces Cards in showdown
May 1, 2008
In a match-up of undefeated teams, Wilton stayed that way.
The Warriors had a team score of 164 to defeat previously unbeaten Greenwich (177), the reigning conference champions, by 13 strokes last Thursday at Rolling Hills.
The 164 score was Wilton’s best at its home course since the 2006 season. The Warriors’ low score at Rolling Hills last season was a 168.
“We played real well against a good opponent,” said Wilton head coach Doug Campbell, whose team improved to 6-0. “Our scores are coming down, which is always what you want to see as the season progresses.”
Greenwich dropped to 7-1 with the loss.
Marshall Stock shot a 38 to lead Wilton and earn medalist honors with the day’s low score. Stock was one stroke away from his career low of 37, which he had in a match with New Canaan last year.
“Marshall had a great day,” said Campbell. “He was really hitting the ball well. He seems to thrive in big matches.”
Brian Murphy had Wilton’s second lowest score with a 39. He missed a birdie putt on the final hole that could have tied him with Stock.
“Brian’s such a talented, steady player,” said Campbell. “You know he’s going to be right there in the running for medalist every match.”
Jim Kachadoorian had a 42 and Will Herndon a 43 to round out Wilton’s scoring. Sean O’Neill had the fifth score with a 54.
“It was a good score, and I think we can get down a little more,” said Campbell. “I think we can take two or three strokes off of that.”
Brian Czarnecki led Greenwich with a 40. Sean Masi shot 43, Jack Applebaum 46 and Jason Morilla 48.
