Last night's news: Wilton selectmen appoint energy, ethics committees
|
The Board of Selectman approved appointments to both the Council on Ethics and the Energy Commission at their meeting on Wednesday night.
The Energy Commission, led by Michael Lindberg, will be “somewhat of a long range type commission” according to First Selectman William Brennan and will consist of nine commissioners. Mr. Lindberg was appointed chair of the commission in August and he said he had interviewed 36 individuals to be members of the commission.
“I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the response from the community,” said Mr. Lindberg.
The nine commissioners together have skills sets in energy expertise, analytical capability, and communication, he said. In addition to the nine commissioners, Mr. Lindberg said Malcolm Whyte, who has worked on a number of building projects in town, and Adam Markham, the executive director of Clean Air - Cool Planet, will serve as special advisors to the commission.
“I would personally like to see Wilton as the model for other communities,” said Mr. Lindberg, saying he wanted Wilton to be “the sustainable energy capital of the Northeast.”
The eight commissioners, besides Mr. Lindberg, are Dr. Ron Cagenello, Selectman Richard Creeth, Ron French, Board of Education member James Furnivall, Bruce Hampson, Rust Muirhead, Mitchell Reichgut, and Jim Snedeker.
Mr. Creeth emphasized that the energy issue is not a political problem and said he looked forward to working on the commission.
“In this country we have two major political parties but we only have one planet,” said Mr. Creeth.
Ethics
On the subject of the Council of Ethics, Mr. Brennan said three members of the Independent Committee on Ethics, which reviewed and revised the Code of Ethics this past spring and summer, had agreed to be the first members on the new council. Those three are Stephen Hudspeth of Glen Hill Road, John Ingersoll of Ryders Lane, and Peter Kaskell of Nod Hill Road.
To fill out the committee, the Democratic and Republican Town Committees put forward a member each: Virginia Benin of Bald Hill Road from the Democrats and Howard Friedman of Mountain Road from the Republicans.
In accordance with the new code, the five members will start with staggered terms on the council. Mr. Hudspeth and Mr. Kaskell will serve a three year term, Mr. Friedman and Ms. Benin will serve a two year term, and Mr. Ingersoll will serve a one year term. All of the appointments are effective immediately.
Complete coverage will appear in next week's edition of The Bulletin.
